Kellerberrin Friday 20 May 2005

Generally, with this blog, I’ve been trying to write each day, about the events of the previous day. The following, however, is written one day “late” – on Saturday May 21st. This time-lag seems to happen at the end of every week, and it’s partly brought on by the workshops I’ve been running down in Cunderdin. Those classes generate a lot of material to be processed (text, photos, sound, video) and it always takes me a while to catch up. As a result, these notes are a bit “impoverished” in detail.

On Thursday arvo, after the workshops, I was exhausted. They really take it out of me. “Full marks” to those brave souls who give their lives to full-time teaching. They deserve large salaries, fringe benefits, and vast holidays. Me, I would not do it as a day job for anything. However, I do find the one-off thing to be rewarding.

Unfortunately for Gwen at the Tammin op shop, I was in no mood to pull in and shoot the shit this week. I was just too tired, and besides, it is nearly the end of May, and my op shop days are now over (except for my ongoing saga: trying to get those damn buttons for my Vern Wright Fire Brigade outfit!) So we sped right on past. I wonder what Gwen thought of my absence. I wonder if she missed me. I wonder how long it will take before she forgets me altogether.

Back in Keller, both Felena and I were greeted with a busy, and somewhat stressful afternoon. I had to go to the cinema to measure up the room. Anne is doing the hard yards in Perth, organising a Hazer machine to blow smoke into the cinema for the Line Describing a Cone event. But we’re worried that the vast cavern of the old Keller cinema is too big to sufficiently fog-up. So I am toying with the idea of presenting it in the stage area instead, and curtaining off the stage. The audience will have to walk up some steps and onto the stage in order to interact with the work. It would concentrate the smoky darkness, which can only be good.

Also, phone conversations with Redmond, who has found us a 16mm xenon arc lamp projector! We need to get it serviced though, so back and forth with Camera Electronics, who are kindly helping us out with that stuff.

It wasn’t til the late arvo that I could get back to what I really wanted to do: post up more daily texts in the window of the gallery. These seem to be having an immediate effect: folks stopping to read them through the glass. Pip, especially, (who since seeing the bin episode has become very curious) pulled up on his bike to have a read. He managed to find the first mention of himself, and a very early mention of the re-painting of the front of his house. This will be interesting, I think: to see people looking for mentions of themselves. I would like to produce an “index” of key names. I wonder how I might go about automating that process?
